When i first started dating my gf, it wasn’t long before she complained about my mattress. I can be extremely observant concerning some things, and completely oblivious to others. The latter being my mattress and its deflated status. It just stopped being perky and damned if i could tell. I caved and got a nice new mattress, leaving my old one feeling a tad neglected. Yes, that red mattress you see was my old one, all recycled and freshly painted with house paint. Chelsea is always fun to work with. What an incredible rack that girl has, i’ll post photos that better illustrate later. After we shot this she disappeared for awhile, shooting Feast 2.

I wish they all could be Jana Cova (sing along to it like a Beach Boys song). Anyhow, shes just perfect. Theres not a damn thing wrong with her, so when i shoot, all i have to think about is how to light her. The most far off idea will work because she looks good from every angle, under any lighting condition. The fake walls behind her were found off craigslist for free, the table she’s elegantly balanced on was found in an alleyway a block or two from my place. I had a 5 gallon bucket of this paint in my shed that i thought was white. It wasn’t until we started spreading it around that it became clear we had ourselves a cream colored room. I painted the table to match as i’ve always wanted to paint an entire room, furniture and all, one color. I think i’ll do more of this actually. This was shot in my backyard, our first set of the day. I went on to shoot a few sets here until the roof caved in a bit and started leaking, making what once was cream, now brownish and rusty. I cleared out my studio completely, fixed the roof, and now i’ve got a clean slate. Lets see what i can come up with!

This was my taken during my third shoot. Not too shabby huh? I was at this giant loft in Downtown LA. It was like living in a parking garage, wall to wall concrete with a hand full of windows. Ariel was known as Ariel Carmine back then. I found her on a model networking site. I found out later that she was ready to quit the business, she accredits me to her sticking around and making it a full time career. Which is immensely flattering, and i’d have to say that if i didn’t have her as one of my first models, i may not have progressed or continued to be inspired the way i was. Shes just simply gorgeous and her look was what i had always wanted to capture. You wouldn’t know it by looking at this photograph, but Ariel is like a sex predator. She’s worse than most dudes. Anyhow, i love this shot. The way her skin town matched the sheet of wood behind her. I put this print up at one of my first gallery shows and it sold immediately to a lesbian who i recognized as some actress from the television.

After shooting with hot lights for so long, being forced to shoot at low f stops, i moved onto strobes where i had the freedom to make all my shots super crisp using higher fstops. Unfortunately, i lost depth along the way. I sorta swing back and forth between my interests. Overcompensating sometimes, if only to understand that form of photographic communication better. Well depth is back in my life and here to stay. This is a tiny example. Ive got loads more work I’ve shot that adds much more depth, but this was the beginning of a new era.

This girl is just way too attractive for her own good. Perfect pencil eraser nipples. Great curves. This was shot in my all black high gloss room. I’m trying to steer away from this type of coloring because it takes away from the girl. I realized that maybe I’m a little too self absorbed, as a lot of my work tends to speak in volumes about my lighting and less about the model themselves. Ill post some photos here of Chelsea smiling and you’ll get an idea of the direction I’m going. Back to the amazing boobage, I received a note the other day asking me how I could shoot women without becoming aroused. Using Chelsea as an example, shes a gorgeous girl, no doubt about it. But she’s more than just a two dimensional object. I’ve gotten to know her, although briefly, and I know realistically we would never get along in a relationship. And I don’t have a desire to sleep with someone I wouldn’t want to be tied to in a relationship. As I get older, black and white is replaced with varying shades of grey. When I was younger, my mind would’ve gone into predator mode instantly. Now that I’m older I feel that I can appreciate her from afar, as a beautiful woman with an amazing personality and a brilliant light beaming from her soul, but I can also recognize that that is all I need from her. Just that admiration from afar. Or to put it more bluntly. She’s vegan, and I would never give up cheeseburgers for a woman. More importantly, I’m already in love with another. :)

The movie, a Clockwork Orange inspired me immensely as an impressionable 18 year old trouble maker looking for a reason to become what i am today.  I was a very sheltered child.  I simply didn’t know this sort of cinema existed.  I remember my mom covering my eyes during the love scene in “the Lost Boys” and all they did was kiss.  My first girlfriend was five years older than me and she did a bit of corrupting.  I was a willing participant mind you.  But that movie changed my life.  It was like a whole new world.  Now i tend to think that direct homages are a bit tacky.  Yeah, i could get the one eyelash thingy, and a cod piece, and whatnot … but i’d rather shoot something that only gives the viewer a hint at my motives.  For those familiar with the film, you’ll notice a certain similarity to the hair style and color, along with of course, the color orange, not to mention the black room, giving us a hint of the korova milk bar.  Btw, none of this was planned in advance.  The model showed up with this outfit, the makeup artist did her hair like this without forethought.  Its pretty amazing how things work together if you let it happen on its own.

i took a couple hours today to surf around and what i thought would be time wasted, ending up being inspirational. when i first started shooting, i did my very best not to seek out inspiration by viewing the work of other photographers. which i think, might be the exact opposite of what most newbies do. if anything i would view hopelessly bad photography as a lesson in what not to do. maybe just to build my confidence. but i also didnt want anyone’s work to “rub off”. its inevatable. as an artist, you absorb all thats around you. whether you like it or not. i remember being bothered with the idea that im bombarded with billboards, television, and random advertisements that i cant help but consume. i didnt want those things to influence my aesthetic. well things change. and although i rarely seek out other’s work, i have come to find inspiration in it, no matter what their level or choice of subject. i find one thing i like about it and attempt to absorb it. im quite a bit more confident these days, knowing that my vision is strong enough to withstand a little outside influence without compromising my aesthetic as a whole. i can take what i want and leave the rest. the way i view the world is unique. ironically, thats the one thing we all have in common, a unique perspective.

i ventured out and viewed several photographers perspectives and became excited to shoot. so many new things to try, to think of. im looking forward to integrating these thoughts into my upcoming shoots.

im hoping to blog a bunch while im on the road, upping snapshots of my progress on the trip. time will tell whether i decide to live in the moment, as is my preferred method, or spend time documenting the event.

oh, and heres some boobs.

im getting ready for my trip up north. ill be going through san fran, portland, tacoma, seattle, and vancouver. ill be gone for over two weeks. i just got back from spending a bunch of money on travel gear. living in LA, i dont own a real jacket. so theres that and i seem to only own converse all stars, which ive been told don’t fare too well in rain and potentially snow. weak. im now the proud owner of sensible shoes and a badass jacket with enough zippers to fund some factory in taiwan 3 months. i also got a camelback, took the bladder out and bang, its a netbook backpack now. im amazing.

things have been really amazing in my life. im fortunate. and immensely grateful.
